It's getting cold outside And it'll stay that way half the year So everybody bring your food and philosophies And start a party here   You may mock us; we're a little eccentric And we're less of hawk than of dove But we sure know how to throw celebrations In the land of peace and love   Peace and love We get grassroots and our grass Is fine Peace and love We'll paint you any color Try the wine You can preach what you preach where you preach it You can fill ivory towers with dreams Pray to God or the Cosmos or Sagan 'Cause there's room for all extremes   We've got stakeouts and shootouts and campouts And the rose in the fisted glove We'll petition while we stockpile ammunition In the land of peace and love   Peace and love They call us evil do you think We care? Peace and love If we all go to hell, at least it’s Warmer there When I came here, I was a child Will I still be when I leave? When I came here, I just wanted to belong Do I belong now? Will I ever return?   So many teachers And a few lovers So many friends I was a child When I came here, I just wanted to belong Do I belong now? Will I ever return?

The Haunt 04:14
MAN & WOMAN: Things went sour, baby No one could deny But who could have predicted That the both of us would die? Well I was rid of you Thought that was what I'd want But there's been no peace of mind for us since We came back for the haunt MAN: I came from the backwoods Searching for fortune and fame Landed in Sin City, knew that One day they’d all know my name WOMAN: How could I resist you When you were poised for success? I should have gone home to my mama Instead I’m with you in this mess MAN: I wined and I dined you Our years together sure were fine WOMAN: You bought the meals at gunpoint Lord knows you downed all of the wine   MAN: And, dear, though I loved you I knew I had to be free WOMAN: You put me six feet under But you ain't seen the last of me WOMAN: Now each night at midnight I haunt the lake, calling your name MAN: And every day I'm running Dodging the law and the blame   WOMAN: The noose is around you Whatcha got to say for your crime? MAN: Just get me off to hell Before it's dinnertime   MAN & WOMAN: Things went sour, baby No one could deny But who could have predicted That the both of us would die? Well I was rid of you Thought that was what I'd want But there's been no peace of mind for us since We came back for the haunt

Hardwood floors Welcome mat Doors leading nowhere and the Ones leading somewhere are shut tight Windows cracked Staircase creaks And well illuminated, there's a Bulb in almost every other light But I'll fix it up all nice… Shower leaks Sink runs dry Don't go in the basement or we'll Have to assume that you died Cold air gets in No air gets out Bed by the window so you Might as well sleep outside But I'll fix it up all nice Gonna tear down this old house And use what I can Rip out the walls Break up the chairs Tear the curtains down Mop all the slop out of the sty Sweep out the dust Pile high the junk For the pyre outside Let it burn up to the sky Hard times come Hard times go Gotta keep perspective or you Wallow in self-pity, and who knows Where you'll be? No matter where you wanna go Tear out all the lumber you can and Polish this old house until it glows I'll fix it up all nice, I tell you I'll fix it up all nice, I'm gonna tell ya I'll fix it up all nice...

Asylum 05:29
Excuse me, stranger Won't you point me down this road? I've been traveling so long I don't know Which way the path goes I hate to admit it I was lost, alone when you found me Because the going gets rough if you can’t be tough And we’ve all been cut adrift And where we’re headed, no one knows Who let the bandits into the bank vaults? Who led the drunkard straight to the rum? Who let the lunatics run the asylum? Tell me, new friend What's the sense in singing songs? We've been singing them so long we don't know Much of their meaning And we lost a good one Who meant more than all of the worship But it just takes one gun to make the demons run And the world is on its head And the swan will no more sing Who let the bandits into the bank vaults? Who led the drunkard straight to the rum? Who told every politician with some money and a mission They could speak for the many when they're just some? Who cast me out to search of a homeland? Who turned my homeland into a slum? Who let the lunatics run the asylum? Goodbye, old friend I have never known your like But I'll remember always the way that You taught me to sing out And lord, I will miss you But I'll honor you and your memory Not with bronze or gold but through tales of old When I think of your embrace And what your life was all about You let the bandits into the bank vaults You led the drunkard straight to the rum You took the muddled and the hurried asked them why they were so worried And you gave them all hope that a change would come You said that someone could be the right one You said that life's too short to be numb You let the lunatics run the asylum

A man walks into a bar Says "I want my money back I thought I'd win if could play by the rules I wouldn't splinter or crack" Barkeep says "Son, have a seat No refunds tonight, I fear And If you're trying not to make new regrets Then what are you doing here?" It's like love letters in the closet It's like monsters under the bed What do you do with a secret You can't confide? It's like Jayne in a bubble with the devil inside A man walks into a bar And runs right into his past It's time to make up for the signals he missed Though there's no chance it'll last   But she says "Boy, lookie here I'll soon be somebody's wife It's a shame you couldn't pick up my cues You missed the time of your life" It's like love letters in the closet It's like monsters under the bed What do you do with a secret You can't confide? It's like Jayne in a bubble with the devil inside A man walks out of a bar And wonders which way to go If he can't trust what they all told him in school How's he expected to know?   They'll tell you what to believe They'll tell you wrong versus right But if you run until there's no place to hide You put your dukes up and fight It's like love letters in the closet It's like monsters under the bed It's like everything you've ever hidden Is suddenly out of your head And you pile the proof in the corner So the world never knows that you lied What do you do with a secret You can't confide? It's like Jayne in a bubble with the devil inside Jayne in a bubble with the devil inside

I've been trying to prove Trying to prove I have a voice Maybe we don't have a choice   I've been trying to climb Over a block endlessly tall Maybe I should take a fall   Maybe there once was hope Maybe the world could change Maybe life proved you wrong Maybe I think that's too strange So maybe I'll fall   I've been trying to fight Fighting to make some meaning heard Maybe you won't hear a word   I've been trying to win Crossing my fingers, filling cracks Maybe I should face the facts   Maybe there once was hope Maybe the world could change Maybe life proved you wrong Maybe I think that's too strange So maybe I'll fall Maybe I'll fall Maybe I'll fall   If you could read my thoughts You'd probably leave Do you believe When Lucifer fell Did anyone grieve In heaven? I've been trying to hope Hope that the earth is gonna turn But maybe we're all gonna burn   I've been seeking control Now I think that's a failed romance But maybe we still have a chance   I've been planning to jump Maybe I'd break before I'd drown But maybe you should talk me down   Maybe there once was hope Maybe the world could change Maybe life proved you wrong Maybe I think that's too strange So maybe I'll fall Maybe I'll fall Maybe I want to fall Maybe you should talk me down

Late September You and me And maybe a friend Who had a few too many   Hell's less humid But that's our lot We're set for winter now Believe it or not   These are the days that I'll remember These are the nights of wasted time But is it really wasted if it's so near sublime? These are the afternoons of wisdom These are the evenings losing light This is just a layover until the next flight Call me up tomorrow if you're doing all right   Drunk girls next door Two AM Trying to climb home No matter what you told them   They came in through the window Then they screamed and ran Dropping in on neighbors Wasn't part of their plan These are the days that I'll remember These are the nights of wasted time But is it really wasted if it's so near sublime? These are the afternoons of wisdom These are the evenings losing light This is just a layover until the next flight Call me up tomorrow if you're doing all right   We did what we could W e grappled with fear Put ambitions on the back burner For one more year   We struck out on dates And we trekked up the hill If I don't write it all down now Maybe I never will   These are the days that I'll remember These are the nights of wasted time But is it really wasted if it's so near sublime? These are the afternoons of wisdom These are the evenings losing light This is just a layover until the next flight   These are the weeks spent in stasis These are the months flying by These are games of chess that make your best friends cry These are the hours ecstatic These are the minutes so bright This is missing you, my friend, with all of my might Call me up tomorrow if you're doing all right

Sometimes you think you know the plan you made Then you let it go Do you think a change is due? Life is trying to shake me Losing what you thought you knew can bend your head around I've been told that it's a crime, not to let you break me But in this place and in this time, you are found, I am found Come on and dance in the fountain with me Let go of all you believe in, baby I'm gonna dance in the fountain Holy water I've been feeling your release perfectly after your tension And I'm feeling my pulse increase, though I offer no explanation Nervous system on alert and disbelief in suspension This religion we convert and begin our own celebration Come on and dance in the fountain with me Let go of all you believe in, baby I'm gonna dance in the fountain Holy water Come on and dance in the fountain with me Let go of all you believe in, baby You're gonna dance in my fountain Holy water Next to you I'm stripped bare, prepared for collision Living in the dream we share, embracing every sensation Out of nothing comes a way, building the world we envision Hear them calling Namasté, and it's total intoxication Come on and dance in the fountain with me Let go of all you believe in, baby Come on and dance in the fountain Holy Water Come on and dance in the fountain with me Let go of all you believe in, baby I'm gonna dance in your fountain Holy Water So let's say a prayer That this stream Will always flow over me and you Through your eyes In your skin Soak your long shining hair (everywhere) Sometimes you think you know the plan you made Then you let it Go

They come from miles and miles From the sunny lowlands And from snowier heights And you said to me As I switched on the headlights: "I always thought that winter kind of bites."   We came to see the difference If the land I loved once Was waiting still But I saw God And I think I knew his will In the light from the city on the hill   We drove through smoke and snowdrifts By the dancing dreadlocked In the shortest jeans And he yelled to us That the world's run by machines I laughed, 'cause I know what he means   The snow came down in torrents Driving out the homeless Making drunk boys spill Into the night We danced and ate our fill Bathed in light from the city on the hill We jumped from gorge to gorge And gorged on fruit of the valley below If a man downtown asks to show you magic Let it go Here the prep-school hacks And be-in refugees are ordinary men In this den of sometime-sinners I am home again   We parked where the lake froze over Where the squatters' daughters Whispered such sweet lies And you said to me And it caught me by surprise -- "This is where you grew up.  I can see it in your eyes." And no matter where we go, you always will It's the light from the city on the hill
